Located along the hillsides above Okanagan Lake, the East Kelowna wine region is officially recognized as the East Kelowna Slopes sub-Geographical Indication (sub-GI). Here, rustic agriculture meets world-class viticulture in an inviting, picturesque place.

While the broader Okanagan Valley has rightfully earned its place on the global wine map, East Kelowna offers a distinct cool-climate experience that is turning the heads of sommeliers and casual sippers. If you are looking for elegant wines strongly anchored in history, this terroir is definitely worth tasting.

Long before today’s modern wineries and tasting rooms appeared, East Kelowna thrived as the agricultural heart of the region, renowned for its sprawling apple and cherry orchards. But the area’s winemaking history stretches back nearly a century. In 1927, horticulturist J.W. Hughes planted the first commercial vines here, beginning a remarkable transformation from orchards to vineyards.

Over time, farmers and families began replacing their heritage fruit trees with grapevines, recognizing the land’s untapped potential. Today, the region’s history is woven directly into the visitor experience.

It is not uncommon to find yourself sipping a modern, award-winning vintage inside a meticulously restored 1920s apple packing house (The View Winery And Cidery), or on land that once served as the Kelowna Land and Orchards headquarters. The region is heavily characterized by independent, family-run estates, where generations of farming skill have been poured directly into every bottle.

In 2022, the East Kelowna Slopes were officially granted sub-GI status, a legal and geographic testament of its incredibly unique and consistent terroir. But what exactly makes the wine grown here so exceptional? The secret lies beneath the surface and in the air, born from a perfect storm of geography, soil, and climate.

The vineyards are primarily planted on the northwest-facing slopes. The soils are a complex mix of gravel, sand, and old lakebed deposits left behind by retreating glaciers thousands of years ago. This mineral-rich, well-draining environment forces vine roots to dig deep for nutrients, resulting in highly concentrated and complex flavours in the fruit.

Perched at elevations up to 550 meters, East Kelowna benefits from a natural moderating effect. The intense, hot, and dry Okanagan summer days are perfectly balanced by cool breezes sweeping off the nearby lake. This significant drop in temperature from day to night slows the ripening process. It allows the grapes to develop full flavour profiles while retaining their natural, crisp acidity, a key element for premium, age-worthy winemaking.

Because of the cooler climate and unique elevation, East Kelowna is a true paradise for specific grape varietals that might otherwise over-ripen in the hotter, desert-like southern parts of the Okanagan Valley.

Pinot Noir is arguably the crown jewel of East Kelowna. The Pinot Noirs crafted here are consistently celebrated across Canada for their light elegance, bright red fruit notes, and distinct, earthy minerality.

You can also expect Chardonnays that lean beautifully away from heavy, buttery oak, showcasing instead a vibrant, crisp acidity and pure, terroir-driven fruit expression.

The East Kelowna wine region is also known for producing stunning, citrus-forward Pinot Gris, Riesling, and Gewürztraminer, all boasting a refreshing, zippy mouthfeel.
